Phase 1: Getting Started
"Introduction to website templates"

Untitled Document

Basic Concepts

What is a web page?
A web page is essentially a "document" sort of like a "Word" document. In this document you can have images, text, and sometimes audio and video. What makes a web page different from a "word" document is that web pages are written in a language called HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). You do not need to know HTML in order to edit web pages if you have a good WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web site editor such as FrontPage, Expression Web Designer, or Dreamweaver.

But having said that, editing/managing a web site is like driving a car -- you may not need to know how the combustion-engine in your car works in order to drive the car, but it may be a good idea how to change the oil, a flat tire, or at the very least how to fill up with gasoline. The more self-reliant you are, the more successful you're going to be in the long run. The same goes for being your own webmaster; we will try to give you as much information as possible, but at some point you may need to go and "google" your question.

What IS a website template?
A website template is essentially a set of pre-designed web pages. Sometimes, these pages have pre-defined navigation buttons, other times you will have a template that includes just an "home page" and a couple of blank layout pages. With all of the website templates from Lucky Marble, you can copy any page included in the template as many times as is needed to complete your project -- you are not limited by the number pages that are included.

Website templates are for "do-it-yourself" minded individuals who want to be in control of their website development but don't have a tonne of money to throw at a high-end web developer.

What is "Flash" and do I need to know it to edit my website
Flash is an animation standard developed by Macromedia (now Adobe). Many of our website templates employ the use of flash animations; however, you should not need to know or need the program "Flash" in order to edit the most common parts of these components (button labels, button links, images). We have tried very hard to make these flash animations modifiable (to a degree) by way of external configuration files -- we include instructions within the template and also in this help section on how to update these flash components.
